Solas 10 years oldThe Solas Cancer Support Centre in Williamstown is celebrating a milestone on Friday 26th February – this was the first day that clients were welcomed into the new Centre 10 years ago.

Lorraine Hurley, from Waterford City, clearly remembers this day having availed of services in the original Centre before the new Centre opened. Lorraine was diagnosed at 14 with a rare type of bone cancer in March 2010 – ‘My first time to the Solas Centre in Williamstown was so different from the house I had visited in Earlscourt. As soon as you come in the door, you can feel how calm, open, and welcoming a place it is. You're always greeted by a kind smiling face and offered a cup of tea. As a wheelchair user, having the centre completely accessible was so important to me too. It's a safe haven during such a painful and scary time, and more often than not it was the highlight of the week.

My sister, myself, and my Mam, who was caring for me full time, all visited the centre for different services - massage, reflexology, counselling, art classes, mindfulness courses, a carers group, and more. When your whole world is dealing with illness, to have somewhere to go to switch off and fully relax means everything. To receive treatments that help your body heal and recover, as well as to learn how better to cope with the hand you've been dealt, and to simply have somewhere to go to sit in the calm and the quiet, makes more of a difference than words could ever fully express. The help we received was invaluable, and we were so lucky to have such a place on our doorstep.

To look back ten years later, the difference that the Solas Cancer Support Centre made for me personally in my recovery is immense. When you imagine multiplying that by every person who has come through their doors in the past decade, you begin to see the impact they've made.’

Manager Tracy McDaid explains the huge community effort that built the Centre: ‘The Centre opened in February 2011 - the culmination of a phenomenal 4-year capital development project that raised €1,250,000. The charity could not provide the services it does without the generous community support that continues today, and we are so grateful for it’.

While the doors of the centres are temporarily closed a wide range of support options are available remotely for anyone who feels they might benefit from support around a cancer related experience. EAP Institute HelgaWill Ireland follow this emerging International trend?

This is one of the key issues that those attending the online course “Passport to Employee Personal Health and Resilience “ will be advised of when they attend a zoom meeting on Thursday 11th March (Part 1) from 10.00 am to 1pm and (Part 2) on Thursday 25th of March from 10.00am to 1pm.

Speakers will in include Maurice Quinlan Director of the EAP Institute Waterford Ireland and Helga Vigfusdottir, Founder of Kara Connect Iceland.

In announcing this online course the Director of the EAP Institute stated “that a new developing concept is that workers will require a wellbeing passport in order to work safely and not transmit the Covid 19 virus to their colleague’s. Their personal passport will show evidence of a positive Covid test and vaccination. While there is no evidence to support the incidence of development in Ireland, the subject is appearing more in reports

The Irish times reported on the 23rd of February 2021 that The Vaccination Credential Initiative, a coalition of organisations including Microsoft, Oracle and the Mayo Clinic, aims to establish standards to verify whether a person has had their shot and prevent people falsely claiming to be protected against the disease.

The Irish-based ROQU Group has announced the pilot launch of Health Passport Ireland, a world-first digital platform designed to facilitate increased COVID-19 testing for businesses and the public. Engineered in Ireland, the platform combines the latest digital technologies with accurate and validated COVID-19 testing solutions, which can deliver results in as little as 15 minutes. The digital platform is a big step towards helping businesses and individuals to quickly minimise risks related to COVID-19 and ensure they can continue daily activities. The system has been designed to work will all official COVID-19 test types.

Concluding Quinlan said:” Any initiative to protect employee safety and health is welcome keeping in mind that under Article 8(1) of the European Convention of Human Rights which states that everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life. It is also one of the fundamental rights protected by the EU’s legal order, In particular it is a person’s right to keep his/her state of health secret.

Theatre Royal King Lear

Theatre Royal Waterford has announced the release of its annual Shakespeare Review for Leaving Cert students, featuring King Lear, which this year is being delivered online to homes and schools across the region.

Directed by Liam Meagher, facilitated by former English teacher Edward Denniston and starring Jenny Fennessy, Andrew Holden, Anne O’Riordan, Joe Meagher and Simon O’Gorman in the title role, the King Lear Review provides a study of key scenes from this year’s Leaving Cert prescribed text, explored in detail by theatre facilitators. The digital stream, available to purchase for €5, was rehearsed and filmed live on stage at Theatre Royal Waterford in strict adherence to public health guidelines.

“The King Lear Review will animate the prescribed Leaving Certificate text for students whose primary experience of it is as a literary text they study in class”, commented director Liam Meagher. “This review doesn’t just retell the plot; instead, we selected key scenes to help students decide how they understand and respond to the play’s central characters - what they say and why they say it, what they do and why they do it. It provides an enlightening experience for the students to witness the scenes brought to life on stage, encouraging them to engage with both the performance and the text.”

Upon purchase, the digital stream will be available to the student for multiple viewings until June, 2021. The resource pack also includes a book of essays from WIT English and Theatre Studies faculty staff, plus a Q&A recorded video session between Leaving Cert students from a number of schools across the region and the creative team.

The King Lear Review is available to purchase for €5 at www.theatreroyal.ie
